pH, pOH and mixing strong acids and bases

Today we went over the homework from Monday, text and ka ws.
Then we took notes on pH and pOH calculations -- see below:

The link below will take you to a worksheet that was assigned on calculating pH pOH and using the kw as well. This sheet is due FRIDAY!!

The second block we took notes on Mixtures of strong acids and bases -- see below

The worksheet below is also due friday -- please only do #1-4 (watch special instructions at top) and then do 6, 8, and 10 only. The answers to this worksheet are in the photo below to see if you are on the right track.

Calculating ka & kb

Ka is the ionization constant for acids and kb is for base. See notes below. Homework is pg 128 #31-33 & pg 130 #35 & 36

We also took notes on the relative strengths of acids and bases - see below.

The link below will take you to the worksheet refered to in the relative strengths of acids and bases notes.  You do not need to do pg 133 -- only the worksheet!!!
ALSO!!!  QUIZ TOMORROW - NOT ON KA/KB STUFF - BUT THE STUFF FROM LAST WEEK.

Strong and weak acids and bases

Today we finished the PowerPoint on the last blog post and we discussed ka chart in our data booklets are organized- see notes below.

We also looked at the equilibrium of water constant and the self ionization of water- see pictures below

Acids and bases begin!!

During the first block today was the solubility unit exam.

Block 2 we started unit 4 - the acids and bases unit!

The link below will guide you to the introduction powerpoint for this unit

Solubility test Wednesday !

Unit 3 solubility test on Wednesday!
Review old government exams for practice problems.
Same format as always 20 multiple choice and about 4 or 5 written

pollution precipitations

Today's notes on pollution precipitation

http://db.tt/icSjDRAL

IMPORTANT!! -- The solubility unit exam will be on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18TH -- NOT TUESDAY.  There is a grad assembly on Tuesday afternoon during block 3 so I had to move the exam!!  I know this will make many of you happy.

Monday we will finish the unit -- please work on the solubility titration problems for Monday's class.

Tuesday 10 April 2012

The solubility product and precipitates forming

Today we went over these solubility product notes and discussed whether precipitates will form or not.
Quiz on ksp on Wednesday !!

Solubility lab on wednesday!! Read through lab handout 12C below. Important note in the lab is to watch for ratios of ions!! Not all are 1:1!

Tuesday 3 April 2012

Dissociation, net ionic & Qualitative analysis

Dissociation reaction practice and net ionic equations due tomorrow - evens only. See worksheet below.

Today we looked at qualitative analysis as a means to identify precipitates in reactions. We will do a lab on this tomorrow.
This lab will be a group lab -- one lab report submitted per group.

Titration races

We discussed ionic and net ionic solutions. See notes below.

Yesterday's class was a review of grade 11 titration exercises. Groups were in contest to see who could perform the most accurate titration based on the colour of the titrate

And the winner was:
